titleOfInvention The Use of Steroids Having a Phenolic A-Ring Structure for Prophylaxis and Therapy of Radical-Mediated Cellular Trauma
abstract The present invention pertains to new pharmaceutical preparations for prophylaxis and therapy of radical-mediated cell damage, consisting of steroids with phenolic A-ring structure-except the esterogens estradiol, estrone, estrione and their 2-hydroxy derivates as well as the steroids with cyclic substituents or with am amino group at the terminal C atom of the aliphatic C-17 side chain-and of pharmaceutical adjuvants. These preparations are characterized by a high-level inhibiting action against cell and tissue changes, such as lipid peroxidation and the oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LPL) cholesterol, caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), free oxygen radicals and other forms of radical; these preparations thus prevent irreversible membrane and endothelial damage resulting therefrom. They therefore contribute to improving the prophylaxis and therapy of radical-induced damage such as that caused by oxygen radicals and/or ROS.
