abstract A system for purifying water supplied to a dynamic dental instrument (10) has a disposable element (20) having an iodinated resin (23). Disease causing microorganisms in water flowing through the element are neutralized with neutralizing agents released directly into the microorganisms when the microorganisms come into contact with the resin (23). Residual iodine is released as water passes through the resin (23) and remains between the element (20) and the dynamic instrument (10) to maintain dental unit water purity. A modified system for purifying water supplied to a dental unit and dynamic dental instrument (100) has two disposable elements (120, 122), each having an iodinated anionic exchange resin (23, 126) containing a continuous fix-rate released iodinated resin I(n). Iodine is released from the resin at a specified and consistent rate as water passes through the resin (23, 126) to maintain dental water purity.
