abstract | A fiber is coated with a soluble material by passing the fiber vertically through an applicator made from a tube that is mounted vertically and that has a constriction with an inner diameter at its narrowest point from about 50 to about 500 micronsgreater than the diameter of the fiber. The inner diameter of the constriction increases gradually above the narrowest point to the top of the constriction and below thenarrowest point to the bottom of the constriction. A solution of the soluble material is fed into the constriction through a sidearm to form a column of solution through which the fiber passes as it is being coated. |
