abstract The present invention relates to the novel glycosphingolipid represented by the formula (A): (see formula I) wherein R represents (see formula II), where R2 represents H or OH and X denotes an integer of 0-26, or -(CH2)7CH=CH(CH2)7CH3 and R1 represents any one of the substituents defined by the following (a)-(e): (a) -CH2(CH2)Y CH3. (b) -CH(OH)(CH2)Y CH3, (c) -CH(OH)(CH2)Y CH(CH3)2, (d) -CH=CH(CH2)Y CH3, and (e) -CH(OH)(CH2)Y CH(CH3)CH2CH3, wherein Y denotes an integer of 5-17. The present invention also relates to an anti-tumor agent and an immunostimulator comprising one or more of the aforementioned compounds as effective ingredients. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a process for preparing a glycosphingolipid, characterized in that a particular glycosphingolipid is collected from a marine sponge Agelas mauritianus.
