titleOfInvention Continuous process for the industrial production of dimethoxyethanal
abstract Process for the continuous preparation of dimethoxyethanal (DME) in which glyoxal is reacted continuously in aqueous solution at 70% by weight with 8 to 12 moles of methanol / mole of glyoxal, in the presence of a cation exchange resin, then that the reaction solution obtained, is subjected to a first distillation, at atmospheric pressure, to recover more than 90% of the unprocessed methanol which is recycled, then to a second distillation under a pressure below 10 ~ 2kPa to isolate an aqueous mixture containing the major part of the DME and tetramethoxy-1,1,2,2 ethane (TME) formed. This mixture, after dilution with water (molar ratio water / TME 29 ~ 4), is subjected to distillation under a pressure lower than l9kPa to remove at the head an aqueous mixture containing more than 98.5% of the TME present and thus obtaining an aqueous solution of DME of purity greater than 98.5%, and that, parallel to these operations, the aqueous mixture containing the TME is treated continuously, while hot, in the presence of a cation exchange resin the distillation bottom from the distillation column of the aqueous mixture containing the major part of DME and TME, in order to obtain a water-methanol-glyoxal mixture from which the methanol is evaporated which is recycled with the methanol recovered previously, before being half recycled with the aqueous starting glyoxal solution after being concentrated and half recycled with the aqueous mixture containing the TME.
