abstract | Rapidly heat powdered aluminum metal, whether alone or in admixture with a previously prepared aluminum nitride powder or a powdered removable or compatible material, in the presence of a source of nitrogen to a temperature within a range of 1873 to 2373 K to convert the powdered aluminum metal to aluminum nitride, then promptly quench the aluminum nitride product. Substantially all of the aluminum metal particles are heated at a heating rate of from 100 K to 10,000,000 K per second. The aluminum metal powder or admixture containing aluminum metal powder is maintained at that temperature for period of 0.2 to 10 seconds. The product has a surface area between 2 and 8 square meters per gram and an oxygen content of less than 1.2 weight percent. |
