titleOfInvention Funerary casket of reduced environmental impact
abstract ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to the provision of a funerary casket for cremation or interment, the combustion and decomposition products of which substantially exclude environmental pollutants. All materials used in the construction of the casket are non-metallic, non-petrochemical, combustible, biodegradable, naturally occuring materials, including derivatives or composites of such materials. As a result the casket retains all of the required functions and appearance of traditional caskets but recognizes the current cultural value in reducing or eliminating harmful environmental pollutants. The casket comprises an elongate case having a base and walls extending about the perimeter of the base thus defining a cavity. The case has an open end opposite the base, the base and walls being interconnected with joining means. A lid is releasably connected to the case, and operable between a closed position over the open end, and an open position. A lock secures the lid to the case in the closed position. Manual lifting handles are attached to opposing walls of the case. Cushioning is provided adjacent at least a portion of the cavity. Coating is applied to an exposed surface of at least one casket element, the element being selected from the group consisting of: base, walls, joining means, handles, lid, cushioning, and lock.
