abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A low-formaldehyde polymer latex composition includes a formaldehyde-scavenging agent selected from a) a compound having the formula wherein A is selected from O, NH, and NR2; R1 is selected from H, 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl methacryloyl acrylol and methacryloxyaceto; and R2 is 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl when R' is 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl; b) a compound having the formula R3CH2R4, wherein R3 and R4 are both -C(O)OR5; R3 is CH3C(O)- and R4 is -C(O) OR5; R3 is -CN and R4 is selected from -C(O)NH2 and -C(O)OR5; or R3 is CH3C(O)- and R4 is -C(O)OCH2CH2OC(O)C(CH3)=CH2; and R5 is a C1-C6 hydrocarbon radical; c) a compound having the formula NCCH2C(O)OCH2-CH-(CH2CH2OC(O)CH2CN)2; d) hydroxylamine; e) salts of hydroxylamine with an acid, the acid having an acid dissociation constant the negative logarithm of which is no greater than about 5.0; and f) the polymerized residue of a compound having the formula wherein A is selected from O, NH, and NR2; R6 is selected from 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl, methacryloyl, acryloyl or methacryloxyaceto; and R2 is 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropy when R1 is 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropy; g) the polymerized residue of a compound having the formula CH3C(O)-CH2-C(O)OCH2CH2OC(O)C(CH3)=CH2. The composition can also include a self-crosslinking polymer latex having N-methylol fuctional groups, such as from polymer-ized residues of N-methylolacrylamide or N-methylol-methacrylamide. In this case, the composition may be of use as a binder for texiles or non-woven materials. The scavenging agent reduces formaldehyde evolution during drying and curing of these compositions.
