titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for controlling a plurality of modems in a rack-mountable enclosure |
abstract | "Method and Apparatus for Controlling a Plurality of Modems in a Rack-Mountable Enclosure" Abstract of the Disclosure An apparatus, system, and method for controlling a plurality of modems in a rack-mountable enclosure comprises at least one system controller circuit card and a plurality of line circuit cards. Each of the line cards includes a plurality of modems for communications between a host system and remote users connected via telephone lines. The line cards are connected via serial links to the system controller. The system controller interfaces the system to a local area network (LAN) such as a token ring for communications with and control of the system by the host system. An error correcting serial link protocol and staggered connector pin arrangement allows hot insertion and removal of circuit boards. Multi-level, host-downloadable protocols enable commands for the line cards to originate at the host system or at the system controller, and commands for the system controller from the host. Software for the line cards and for the system controller is downloadable from the host via the LAN interface, thereby allowing dynamic protocol adjustment and adaptability to different line card configurations. The system controller dynamically monitors all line cards, signals when line cards are faulty, and adapts to the replacement of a card, without powering down the system. |
