titleOfInvention | Aqueous polymer emulsion water-repellent coating composition and method of application |
abstract | IN THE UNITED STATES PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE AQUEOUS POLYMER EMULSION WATER-REPELLENT COATING COMPOSITION AND METHOD OF APPLICATION Abstract of the Disclosure An aqueous polymer emulsion coating composition and method of application are disclosed for rapidly developing a water repellent film on a porous surface under ambient temperature conditions, the composition containing: (a) up to about 5 wgt. % of an emulsifiable wax; (b) up to about 5 wgt. % of a polybutene polymer; (c) up to about 3 wgt. % and preferably no more than about 1-2 wgt. % of an emulsifier formed from a fatty acid and a volatile amine or NH3; and (d) balance water. The composition is applied to facilitate penetration into pores of the surface. The composition includes at least about 85 wgt. %, preferably about 88 wgt. % water. The emulsifiable wax is preferably paraffin and/or polyethylene. The composition may also include other adjuncts, in particular an additional film-forming polymer which is preferably a polyacrylate. The wax and polymer are selected for the ability of being stably emulsified in water and being carried into the pores of the surface by the water; the emulsifier, upon being exposed to ambient air during application, has its volatile amine or NH3 component volatilized in order to rapidly develop a water repellent film while substantially retaining the original appearance of the porous surface. |
