abstract | ABSTRACT An aminophenolic compound can be synthesized by contacting a halo-nitro-phenolic compound, such as 2-chloro-4,6-dinitroresorcinol, with a hydrogenating agent, such as hydrogen, and a catalyst, such as palla-dium-on-carbon, in an aqueous solution in the presence of an acid such as phosphoric acid. Reduction in an aqueous medium is safer and more cost-effective than reduction in an organic medium. The acid prevents oxidation of the monomer by oxygen dissolved in the aqueous medium.
