abstract | TETRAHYDROQUINOLINES AND METHOD OF PREPARATION Abstract of Disclosure A new process of preparation of a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline containing an alkyl group in the 2- position and an alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic thio, sulfonyl or phosphonium group in the 4- position comprises the step of reacting (a) an unsubstituted or substituted aniline salt with (b) an alkyl, aryl, or heterocyclic thiol, sulfinate or phosphine nucleophile and (c) an enolizable alkyl aldehyde containing an alpha hydrogen and 2 to 15 carbon atoms in an organic solvent for the reactants. This simple one step process that can be carried out at ambient temperature enables formation of new compounds that are useful in preparation of photographically useful compounds and other compounds. |
