abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A compound having the formula: wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted C1-C12 alkyl, C5-C7 cycloalkyl, C7-C12 aralkyl or C6-C12 aryl radical, the substituent being a cyano, aryl, hydroxy, amino or halo group. These com-pounds are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of various oxides and sulfides of 1,4-disubstituted-2,3,5,6-tetrahydroxy-1,4-diphosphorinanes which are useful as flame retardants.
