abstract ?808p PATENT Cartwright Case 6 CRASH BAG PROPELLANT COMPOSITION AND METHOD FOR GENERATING NITROGEN GAS Abstract of Disclosure A gas-generating propellant composition comprising an azide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal and an oxide of a non-toxic transition metal element in an amount of up to about 70% of the stoichiometric equivalent of the azide, the remainder of the stoichiometric equivalent of the azide being a modifier component represented by the formula MexAno in which Me is iron or copper and An is an anion of an oxy-gen-containing inorganic acid, the anion and capable of reacting with the metal azide component to obtain non-toxic by-products less basic than a metal hydroxide corresponding to the metal azide, and x and o are positive numbers each not exceeding about 4 and together not exceeding a sum of about 5, and its use in an inflatable impact-protecting crash bag for a vehicle and containing the said ignitable propellant composition to generate a bag-inflating gas by an exothermic reaction when activated by a sensing device that is responsive to rapid deceleration of the vehicle.
