titleOfInvention Procedure and apparatus for removing one or more layers of strands from multistrand cable
abstract Process and Apparatus for Removing One or More Layers of Strands from Multistrand Cable Abstract A process for removing, from a multistrand cable, a broken or defective strand that is helically wound in a layer with other strands around a core portion of the cable, wherein the cable is advanced continuously through a guide with the core portion passing into the guide and the strands to be removed passing over a flaring external wall of the guide, while a rotary circular saw, positioned adjacent the guide with the saw teeth moving lengthwise of the cable, cuts in succession each helical turn of each strand to be removed. The guide wall is smoothly curved (e.g. circular) in cross-section at and for a substantial distance beyond the cutting locality, and the saw teeth rotate in a plane containing the geometric axis of this wall. The cutting operation can be performed in line with a stranding machine for winding replacement strands on the cable core portion. Apparatus for performing the described operation includes, in combination with the saw, a guide having an entry opening into which the cable core portion passes and a frustoconical external wall portion flaring away from the opening in the direction of cable advance.
