abstract TITLE THERMOMETRY USING PHASE TRANSITIONS IN ENCAPSULATED LIQUID CRYSTALS AND MAGNETIC RESONANCE DETECTION METHODS INVENTORS Glenn A. McRae David P. Spencer Kenneth J. Franklin ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Liquid crystals have been encapsulated prefer-ably in a biologically compatible coating material. The phase transition of these encapsulated liquid crystals, which is indicative of a specific temperature, was moni-tored by magnetic resonance techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance, or electron spin resonance in vitro and in a biological phantom system. The technique is useful inter alia in monitoring hyperthermia treatment of inaccessible tumours.
