abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Optically-pure pyrrolidinedione and pyrrolidinone derivatives are described, which are obtained as synthetic intermediates in a process for the production of optically-pure 4-amino-3-hydroxycarboxylic acid derivatives, useful for the preparation of peptides that inhibit renin. The intermediates have the formula: wherein W' is an N-protecting group, R"1 is a variety of hydrocarbon radicals, Q is a hydroxyl group, and Q' is non-existent (in which case the broken line is an additional bond) or a hydrogen atom. Q and Q' taken together may represent an oxygen atom.
