abstract ABSTRACT A process for producing 2,6-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, which comprises reacting 2,6-dichlorobenzyl chloride with an acetate-forming agent to form its acetate, followed by hydrolysis to obtain 2,6-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, wherein anhydrous sodium acetate is used as the acetate-forming agent, and a quaternary ammonium salt is added as a phase transfer catalyst during the acetate-forming reaction.
