titleOfInvention | Method of splicing fiber optic cable |
abstract | A METHOD OF SPLICING FIBER OPTIC CABLE ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A method is disclosed for splicing a first fiber optic cable connected to a source of light energy, to a second fiber optic cable. The method includes prepairing an end of the first fiber optic cable into an optical finish and installing the prepared end into a fixed connector stage. An end of the second fiber optic cable is prepared in the same manner as the first fiber optic cable and is installed into a movable connector stage. The movable connector stage is then located in close proximity to the fixed connector stage with the prepared ends of the first and second fiber optic cables coarsely located along a common horizontal axis. An alignment device is installed to the movable connector stage and a second end of the second fiber optic cable installed into a photo-detector device. The alignment device and the photo-detector device are electrically connected to a control device whereby, responsive to the photo-detector the control device sends control signals to the alignment device moving the movable connector stage relative to the fixed connector stage. The movable connector stage is moved about the common axis until the photo-detector detects a point of low loss coupling between the first and second fiber optic cables. The movable connector stage is then fixed in position relative to the fixed connector stage and the alignment device and photo-detector removed. |
