abstract | TITLE Novel Phenyl-Substituted Sulfonamides Abstract This invention relates to l~benzopyransulfonamides, l-benzothiopyransulfonamides, l-benzoxepinsulfonamides and i-bsnzothiepinsulfonamides which are useful as plant growth regulants and in particular as herbicides. Specifically, the following compounds are disclosed: A compound of the formula: wherein J is or ; Q is O, S or SO2; R is H or CH3; R1 is H, CH3, OCH3, Cl, Br, CO2R5, SO2R6, OSO2R7 or SO2NR8R9; R4 is H or CH3; R2 and R3 are independently H or C1-C3 alkyl; R5 is C1-C3 alkyl, CH2CH=CH2, CH2CH2OCH3 or CH2CH2Cl; R6 is C1-C3 alkyl; R7 is C1-C3 alkyl or CF3; R8 and R9 are independently C1-C2 alkyl; A is or X is CH3, OCH3 or Cl; Y is CH3, OCH3, OC2H5, CH2OCH3, C2H5, NH2, NHCH3 or N(CH3)2; Z is CH or N; G is O or CH2; and X1 is CH3, OCH3 or OC2H5; and their agriculturally suitable salts; provided that: 1) when X is Cl, then Z is CH and Y is OCH3, NH2, NHCH3, N(CH3)2 or OC2H5; 2) the total number of carbon atoms in R2 and R3 are less than or equal to 3; 3) in Formula J2, when R2 and R3 are other than H, then R4, is H; 4) in Formula J3, when R2 is other than H, then R4 is H; 5) when Q i s S, then R1 is not SO2NR8R9; 6) in Formulae J3 and J6, Q may not be 0; and 7) in Formula J7, R1 is not CH3. |
