titleOfInvention Preparation of sulphonates
abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCL()SURE The present invention relates to a process for producing polyoxyalkylene ethane sulphonates of formula wherein R is selected from a C1-C20 alkyl group and a phenyl group having at least one C1-C20 alkyl substituent, R1 is H or CH3, M is a cation, x is an integer from 1 to 3, m has a value from 0 to 20 and n has an average value from 1 to 50 such that when R1 is H and x is 1, the sum of m + n is from 1 to 50. The polyoxyalkylene ethane sulphonates are useful as surfactants. The process comprises reacting the parent ethane halide with a metal sulphite in an aqueous medium in the presence of a small quantity of the preformed reaction product, The presence of the reaction product avoids problems of high viscosity during reaction. .s, ~
