abstract ABSTRACT Process for the preparation of enamines according to formula wherein R = (substituted) alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl and R2 = H, Hal, R1, R1SO2 or CN or R1 and R2 together form part of a ring system containing at least 3 carbon atoms, by reacting a compound according to formula with a hydride-type reducing agent, in particular LiA1H4 or NaBH4. The enamines (some of which are novel) can be used for the preparation of novel dihydropyridines, by reacting these enamines wherein R2 = H with .beta.-unsaturated ketones such as chalcone, these dihydropyridines may be of interest per se, or as intermediates in the preparation potentially biologically active compounds.
