abstract | ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pharmaceutical composition and process for providing the same are provided herein. The composition is one in which a serotonin precursor, e.g., 5-hydroxytryptophane or derivatives of 5-hydroxytryptophane having the formula: wherein R preferably represents hydrogen (to provide 5-hydroxytrytophane); or a C1-C12 alkyl group; or a C5-C16 alicyclic, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbyl, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbyl group (e.g. methyl, propyl, pentyl, octyl, dodecal, n-butyl, t-butyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, decalinyl, perhydroanthryl, 4-methylcyclohexyl, phenyl, p-isopropylphenyl, benzyl, alkyl-substituted benzyl, naphthyl, anthryl, phenanthryl, halo, or hydroxyl), is chemically associated with a nitrogenous heterocyclic derivative of a purine, pyrimidine or pyridine base, e.g., inosine, theophylline, theobromine, allopurinol, pyridoxine, hypoxanthine, folic acid, adenine, nicotinamide, caffeine or orotic acid. Such salt or complex has been found to be suitable for increasing cerebral serotonin concentrations. |
