abstract ABSTRACT The invention relates to binders for the formulation of electrophoretic coating compositions. The binders, which are water-dilutable upon partial or total neutralization with acids, are epoxy resin ester based, and are character-ized in that they are produced by n process in which the epoxy groups of a resin like compound with at least 2 1,2-epoxy groups per molecule and an epoxy equivalent of at least 160 are reacted completely at 60 - 75°C, in the presence of inert solvents, with a semi-ester of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an N-2-hydroxyalkyl oxazolidine having the general formula R1 being a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydro-carbon radical, R2 being a straight chain or branched alkylene radical, R3 being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical and R4 being a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical with up to 6 C-atoms and, optionally, together with further compounds for introducing additional crosslinking functions and/or other functions influ-encing film formation and/or film surface, the quantity of oxazolidine semi-ester being chosen such that the epoxy-fr?. final product has a theoretical amine number of at least 35, preferably 50 to 140 mg KOH/g.
