titleOfInvention Semipermeable membranes and process for producing the same
abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved semipermeable membrane for ultrafiltra-tion with increased water flux and a process for its preparation are disclosed. The semipermeable membrane which comprises dense surface layer of a thickness of about 0.01 to about 1 µ having fine pores of an average pore size of about 5 to 100 .ANG., a comparatively dense porous intermediate layer of a thickness of about 2 to about 30 µ having fine pores of an average pore size of about 100 .ANG. to about 0.2 µ, and a porous substrate layer of a thickness of about 20 to about 500 µ having fine pores of an average pore size of about 0.1 to about 5 µ, wherein said layers are composed of aromatic polysulfone free of a group which dissociates and formed continuously in a membrane body in that order. The semipermeable membrane is produced by a process comprising casting a membrane forming solution having a viscosity at 30°C of about 200 to about 10,000 poises prepared by dissolving in an aprotic polar organic solvent an aromatic polysulfone free of a group which dissociates and a salt of an inorganic acid or of an organic acid into a desired shape, and contacting the solution case with a coagulating solution to coagulate the aromatic polysulfone, wherein the salt is present in the membrane forming solution in the range of about 0.5 to about 15% by weight based on the weight of the solution.
