abstract | ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention is concerned with a process for preparing a diester of oxalic acid which comprises bringing carbon mono-xyde into contact with an ester of nitrous acid or with an al-cohol and a nitrogen oxide or a hydrate of the nitrogen oxide in the gaseous phase in the presence of a solid catalyst con-taining metallic palladium or a salt thereof, a gas containing molecular oxygen being introduced into the reaction system in cases where said nitrogen oxide or a hydrate of the nitrogen oxide requires molecular oxygen together with the alcohol to form an ester of nitrous acid. This process is particularly advantageous because it allows to produce diester of oxalic acid in a high selectivity, in a high space time yield even under ordinary pressure or reduce pressure, and it requires no expensive high pressure apparatus, reduce the power of compres-sion of the starting material and allow to increase the durabi-lity of the catalyst. |
