ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to novel supported catalysts and a process for their preparation which is characterised in that inert support material, having a surface area of less than 20 m2/g, is impregnated to saturation with a base, then drying the impreg-nated support and impregnating it in a manner which is in itself known with a metal salt solution and/or noble metal salt solution in an amount such that the support contains 0.01 to 50 gram equiva-lants of base per gram equivalent of metal. The invention further relates to the use of the novel catalysts for catalytic hydrogenat-ion, dehydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, oxidation, polymerisation, isomerisation or cyclisation reactions. This process provides catalysts with an enriched catalyst layer directly below the sur-face, thus effecting savings in the impregnated metal, which is especially significant for the expensive noble metals. These catalysts also exhibit longer life, resistance to poisoning, and produce fewer by products compared to conventional similar high-surface area catalysts. |
