abstract ABSTRACT To measure the alcohol concentration in exhaled air, the alcohol concentration S of the exhaled air and also the flow rate v of the exhaled air are continually ascertained, and the alcohol concentration S is indicated when G, wherein , is below a prescribed first threshold value W and when the flow rate v, after it has exceeded a prescribed second threshold value vmin and until G has fall-en below the first threshold value, has continually been greater than vmin. The apparatus for carrying out this method has a measuring apparatus and a flowmeter disposed in the flow of exhaled air reversal of flow being prevent-ed by a non-return valve, and also in indicating unit. An AND-gate triggers a linear gate with equal triggering by a first threshold value comparator and a second threshold value comparator and a first flip-flop. The linear gate serves to transmit the measured value of the measuring apparatus to the indi-cating unit.
