titleOfInvention | Apparatus for detecting deviant grain direction in timber, particularly sawn timber |
abstract | ABSTRACT: An apparatus for detecting deviant grain direction in timber by means of high frequency radio energy like microwave radiation. According to the invention the deviant grain direction in timber, especially in sawn timber can be detected so that knots cause no significant error to the measuring result. The knots are detected by the apparatus according to the invention in so far as they contains the deviation of wood grain. The microwave radiation is let to pass or reflect from the piece timber (1). Radiation is transmitted by a transmitting antenna (3) with a certain direction of polarisation and is received by a receiving antenna whose direction of polarisation forms an angle of 90° with the direction of polarisation of transmitting antenna. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the polarisation of transmitting field is changed so that it alternatively is parallel or perpendicular to the direction of polarisation of receiving antenna. The signal of deviant grain direction is measured when both polarisation planes are perpendicular to each other and the reference signal is measured when the said polarisation planes are parallel. |
