abstract ABSTRACT The present invention relates to novel compounds of the formula and salts thereof, wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and are each hydrogen, alkyl, halogen, carbomethoxy, carbethoxy, alkoxy, or alkanoyl, R6 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R3, R4 and R5 are same or different and are each hydrogen, methyl, methoxy, ethoxy, methoxyethoxy or ethoxyethoxy with the pro-viso that R3, R4 and R5 are not all hydrogen, and the further proviso that when two of R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen the third of R3, R4 and R5 is not methyl. The compounds can be oxidized to the corresponding sulfinyl compounds which are potent gastric acid se-cretion inhibitors.
