titleOfInvention Method for the recovery of metallic copper
abstract IMPROVED METHOD FOR THE RECOVERY OF METALLIC COPPER ABSTRACT An integrated process for the recovery of copper from impure copper bearing materials is provided by leaching the copper bearing material with sulfuric acid to convert the copper value to the soluble copper sulfate, separating the impure copper sulfate containing solution from the insoluble leach residue, selectively extracting the copper value from the leach liquor by contacting the liquor with an organic extractant for the purpose of obtaining mass transfer between the liquors, separating the organic phase containing the copper value from the aqueous phase of thus reduced copper content, stripping the copper from the organic copper extractant by contacting with liquor of enhanced acid content resulting from a subsequent reduction step, thus regenerating the organic extractant, separating the thus purified copper containing acidified aqueous solution from the solution of the regenerated organic extractant, contacting and thus reacting the acidified copper containing solution with an organic solution of amine extractant to reduce its acid concentration to a desired level, and recovering a part of the copper metal by reacting the copper containing solution of lowered acid content with sulfur dioxide or like reductant before recirculating it, together with any retained copper sulfate and the additionally formed sulfuric acid produced as a result of the reduction step to the step of the process aforesaid in which further copper value is stripped from the loaded organic ion exchange extractant. Acid value transferred to the amine is largely in the form of an amine sulfate solution in the organic diluent in which the amine is carried but additionally can becarried by adsorption. This solution is regenerated by contra flow water wash to yield sulfuric acid which is used in the leaching of further ore to produce the feed stream of impure copper sulfate to the extraction stage of the copper ion exchange step of the process.
