abstract ABSTRACT OF INVENTION An improved process for preparing iodophor preparations which comprises adding an ion selected from the group consisting of iodate, bromate, chlorite, chromate, hypo-chlorite, permanganate and persulfate ions and hydrogen peroxide to the iodine carrier selected from the group con-sisting of povidone, cationic, anionic and nonionic detergent compounds and an iodide salt, to result in a substantially pure iodophor compound which is virtually free of autode-graded iodide ion contamination and unreacted elemental iodine, said iodophor compounds exhibiting an enhanced stability. The process is also applicable to eliminate the presence of elemental iodine contaminants, iodide contam-ination and loss of titratable iodine during the process pre-paring pharmaceutical dosage forms containing iodophor active ingredients to enhance the stability and potency of the respective product.
