abstract | ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Improved supported thallium reagents are provided which signifi-cantly improve reaction rates and product selectivity of oxythallium reac-tions. The supported thallium reagents have a thallium salt of a Bronsted acid on the surface of and within, montmorillonite clay minerals, the rea-gent containing from 0.5 to 50 percent by weight thallium at least 75% of which is in the +3 oxidation state. The montmorrillonite clay preferably is an acidic montmorillonite having a surface area greater than 200m2/gram. The supported thallium reagent may be prepared by contacting the montmoril-lonite clay with the thallium salt in a mixture of methanol and trimethyl orthoformate and then removing solvent under reduced pressure until a free-flowing power is obtained. In use, an improved oxythallation of a nucleo-philic organic compound containing an olefinic, acetylenic or carbonyl group or carbon-nitrogen double bond by reaction with an electrophilic thallium (III) salt, is provided by supporting the thallium salt on the montmorillonite clay mineral, the montmorillonite supported thallium rea-gent containing from 0.5 to 50 percent by weight thallium at least 75% of which is in the +3 oxidation stats. |
