titleOfInvention Process for concentrating and recovering gallium
abstract ABSTRACT A process for recovering and concentrating gallium and other values from phosphorus-furnace flue-dust in which the flue dust is treated with sulfuric acid for the formation of a leach solution and a leach residue, which may be treated for recovery of values, precipitating zinc from the leach solution as zinc ammonium sulfate hexahydrate and adding an alkaline material to the solution for precipitation of a first gallium concentrate and formation of a gallium-free solution, which may be treated for recovery of sodium, potassium and ammonium sulfates and phosphates. The first gallium concentrate may be upgraded by mixing the concentrate containing phosphate in a slurry with lime to precipitate calcium phosphate. Sodium hydroxide is subsequently added to redissolve coprecipitated gallium and aluminum compounds. Residual precipitate is recycled to the sulfuric acid treatment and the solution is neutralized to precipitate an upgraded gallium concentrate. Aluminum may be removed prior to or after precipitation of upgraded gallium concentrate and may be precipitated by adding a suitable cal-cium compound. Upgraded concentrate may be dissolved in an alkaline solution and the solution electrolyzed for deposition and recovery of gallium.
