abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for use in moulding the tread portion of a pneumatic tyre. The apparatus includes a solid or substantially solid annular former of elastomeric material and a stretching device which is actuable to cause or permit an increase in diameter of the former and a support engageable with the inner periphery of the former. The method includes the steps of locating an annular, substantially inextensible breaker on the radially outer surface of the former, increasing the diameter of the former to stretch the breaker, locating the former with the breaker in the stretched condition thereon in a mould, moulding a tyre portion over the stretched breaker, moulding a tyre sidewall in contact with the tread portion, curing the moulded tyre tread and side-wall and removing the former from the interior of the cured tyre tread and sidewall.
