abstract | ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Xanthones of the general formula: (I) and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts and esters thereof wherein A represents a carboxy group; R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group with 1 to 9 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group with 1 to 9 carbon atoms or an alkoxyalkoxy group with 2 to 9 carbon atoms; and X represents a group of the formula: (Ia) or (Ib) in which R1 represents an alkyl group with 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic acyl group with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, an aroyl group with 7 or 8 carbon atoms, an aralkyl group with 7 or 8 carbon atoms, a p-toluenesulfonyl group, a radical of the formula -CO-(CH2)n-Het (in which n is an integer from 1 to 3 and Het represents a morpholino or piperidino group), a carbamoyl group, a carboxyalkyl group with 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a radical of the formula -CH=C(COO Alk)2 in which Alk represents an alkyl group with 1-5 carbon atoms; and R3 represents a p-toluenesulfonyl group. The compounds of formula (I) possess interesting anti-allergic activity and are, in particular, of importance in the treatment of allergic asthma and asthmatiform bronchitis of allergic origin. |
