titleOfInvention | Video disc and method of making the same |
abstract | ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a process for producing replicas from a master matrix and to be replicas produced from the process. Prior attempts at providing video information have generally involved the use of video tape recorders of various sorts as well as photographic techniques. Still other approaches have attempted to utilize thermoplastic records or the surface alteration of a thin metallic film. These have resulted, however, in high costs which would be too expensive for playback in an inexpensive home instrument. The present invention overcomes these deficiencies of the prior art by providing an improved process for producing a disc-shaped record and the record itself. The record is made by forming a master matrix carrying information represented as a series of surface discontinuities positioned out of the plane of a planar surface of the matrix and arranged in a track-like fashion. Each discontinuity has a constant dimension in the radial direction, and a constant maximum dimension in the direction perpendicular to the planar surface, the length of each discontinuity in the circumferential direction and the distance between adjacent discontinuities in the circumferential direction representing stored information. A negative mold is formed against the matrix and thus has an upper surface carrying the video information in a form complementary to the information carrying surface of the matrix, the upper surface discontinuities separated by flat surface portions of the upper surface. A replica disc is then made in the mold by casting a polymerizable resin in the mold, and upon removal from the mold, the replica disc has a planar surface exhibiting a pattern of surface of dicontinuities arranged identical to the information track carried by the master matrix. |
