abstract ABSTRACT A process for preparing an iodonium chloride compound corresponding to the formula wherein R is a radical of formula: where X is hydrogen, halo, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, NO2, CF3, CONH2, or COOR' where R' is hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, characterized by (1) reacting together thiophene with a compound of the formula R-I (OCOCZCl2)2 where Z is H or Cl and R is as defined above, and (2) reacting the product of step (1) with HCl. The products are known compounds useful as antimicrobial agents for control of bacterial and fungal organisms.
