abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and novel carbonic acid esters are provided for the protection of amino and imino groups in an amino and imino group-containing compounds; the process comprises reacting an amino or imino group-containing compound with a carbonic acid ester of the formula: wherein R1 is lower alkyl which may have substituents selected from the group of halogen, lower alkoxy and aryloxy, or ar(lower)-alkyl which may be unsubstituted or substituted with one or more of lower alkoxy, halogen, nitro and cyano, and R2 is benzotriazolyl which may have halogen; or a group represented by the formula: wherein Y and Z are each an electron withdrawing group.
