abstract Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to rifamycin derivatives of the formula wherein Me represents a methyl group and Z represents alkenyl of 3 to 5 carbon atoms or alkynyl of 3 to 5 carbon atoms. These compounds are prepared by reacting 3-formylrifamycin SV with an aminopiperazine of the formula: wherein Z is as previously defined. The novel rifamycin derivatives of this invention are useful because they possess the usual broad spectrum activity peculiar to rifamycin derivatives coupled with extremely high activity and low toxicity permitting control of bacterial infections by oral administration with long intervals between doses, for example, it has been found that a single weekly dose will give effective control.
