abstract monoclonal antibodies, polypeptide, expression vector, host cell, pharmaceutical composition and recombinant anti-idiotype antibody, uses of these, diagnostic kit and assay methods for detecting monoclonal antibodies directed against influenza a virus are described, which have the property of be able to bind a plurality of influenza virus subtypes. a preferred embodiment is the antibody designated as fab 28, which exhibits a neutralizing activity against a plurality of influenza a virus subtypes. anti-idiotype antibodies directed against the monoclonal antibodies of the invention, vaccine or immunogenic compositions comprising the monoclonal antibodies of the invention are also described as well as therapeutic, prophylactic and diagnostic applications for the monoclonal antibodies of the invention. the monoclonal antibodies of the invention can also be used to test antibody preparations to be used as vaccines.
