The present invention relates to an oxygen-carrying protein based on modified porphyrin, such as hemoglobin, which has been found, in its unmodified state to have a low-affinity electron transfer site and a high transfer-affinity of an electron between a heme ferryl iron and a reductant through one or more protein amino acids. the invention provides such proteins which comprise a modification to elevate this pathway.
