abstract The present invention relates to the use of polyprenylated benzophenones isolated from Garcinia gardneriana, a plant popularly known as Bacupari, Bacuri or Bacuripari, as inhibitors of serine and cysteine proteases such as cathepsins B and G, lysosomal proteolytic enzymes involved in tumor spread and dissemination. HIV infection, which potentiates such natural products as chemotherapeutic agents. More specifically, the present invention relates to the antiproteolytic activity of gutiferone A and 7-epiclusianone and their use for the prevention and / or treatment of cancer, especially metastatic cancer, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
