abstract Summary of the Invention Patent for: "PRODUCTION OF GLYCOLIC ACID BY FERMENTATION FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES". The present invention provides a method for the biological production of glycolic acid from a fermentable carbon source in a microorganism. In one aspect of the present invention, a process for converting glucose to glycolic acid is achieved by using a recombinant organism comprising transformed E. coli host i) to attenuate the pathways of consumption of glyoxylate to other compounds other than glycolate ii) to use a NADPH glyoxylate reductase to convert glixylate to glycolate, iii) to attenuate the level of all glycolate metabolizing enzymes and iv) to increase the flow to the glyoxylate pathway. In another aspect of the present invention, the process for producing glycolic acid from a fermentable carbon source using a recombinant E.Coli is improved by increasing the availability of NADPH in cells. Optionally, the glycolic acid produced can be purified through a polymerization step to at least glycolic acid dimers and recovered by depolymerizing the dimers, oligomers and / or glycolic acid polymers.
