The invention in general provides a method of monitoring diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of glioma. Specifically, the invention establishes three (3) prognostic subcies of glioma, which are differently associated with the activation of the akt and Notch signaling pathways. Tumor showing markers of neural or proneural PN lineage (including elements of the notch pathway) shows longest patient survival mean, while the two remaining tumor markers Prolif and Mes are associated with short survival. Tumors classified in this way can also be treated with PN Prolif or Mes therapies that correspond to subclassification, in combination with anti-mitotic agents, anti-angiogenic agents, Akt antagonists and neural differentiation agents.
