A wet fiber-based composition including wet glass fibers, a water dispersible polymeric resin, and plaster is provided. Components including melamine formaldehyde, a filler, coupling agents, acetic acid, an accelerator, and / or a hardener may also be added to the composition. The plaster may be a <244> -plaster, <225> -plaster, or combinations thereof. Wet glass fibers are wet cut glass fibers or a continuous damp wick. The combination of wet glass fibers, water dispersible polymer resin, and plaster has a synergistic effect that creates a composite product that is water resistant, fire resistant, and has improved mechanical properties. In one exemplary embodiment, the wet fiber-based composition is employed to form a plaster sheet that can be molded into various composite products. In other exemplary embodiments, the thin multi-ply gypsum sheets may be alternately formed by layering the glass fillings with layers of a polymer <sym> gypsum slurry. |
