"PROCESS FOR OBTAINING ALKYL ESTERS FROM FATTY ACIDS, ROSINE ACIDS AND STEROES FROM CRUDE TALL OIL". The present invention relates to a process for obtaining fatty acid alkyl esters, rosin acids and sterols from crude tall oil (CTO) which is characterized by the following steps: (a) by reacting the free fatty acids present in CTO with lower alcohols; (b) esterifying sterols in CTO with boric acid or transesterifying with catalyst; (c) separating the lower alkyl fatty acid esters and rosin acids from the remaining sterol borate esters or the fatty acid ester esters for the production of a sterol ester stream; (d) separating the fatty acid alkyl esters from rosin acids to produce a first fatty acid alkyl ester stream and a secondary rosin acid stream; and (e) converting said sterol esters to free sterols for the production of a third stream of free sterols. |
