titleOfInvention Coating, coating composition and process for increasing coating adhesion
abstract "COATING, COATING COMPOSITION AND PROCESS TO INCREASE COATING ADHESION". The invention relates to a coating composition which demonstrates increased adhesion and a process for improving the adhesion of a coating composition to a metal. The coating and process of the invention provide greater adhesion of a coating when the coating is applied directly to metal substrates, especially untreated metal substrates such as galvanized steel, un-sanded aluminum and un-sanded cold-rolled steel. More particularly, the invention provides a composition comprising (1) an efficient amount of a first compound having an acid number of 70 to 120 mg KOH / g, a hydroxyl number of 200 to 400 mg KOH / g, a molecular weight of from 300 to 700 and which is the reaction product of (a) at least one difunctional carboxylic acid, (b) at least one trifunctional polyol, (c) at least one chain switch and (d) phosphoric acid, (II) an efficient amount of a second compound comprising a carboxy phosphate ester having the formula (I), wherein R is a C 5 -C 4 aliphatic group wherein one or more atoms aliphatic carbon moieties are substituted by side or terminal -COOR ^ 1 ^ groups, wherein R ^ 1 ^ is H, metal, ammonium, C 1-6 alkyl, or C 6-6 aryl. . M is hydrogen, metal or ammonium and x is a number from 0 to 3 and (III) a compound that provides low surface tension and promotes surface wetting of a substrate.
