titleOfInvention | methods for increasing sucrose content, reducing active pyrophosphate (pfp) dependent phosphofrutokinase level, maintaining or increasing sucrose level and manipulating sucrose metabolism in sugarcane, isolated nucleotide sequences, genetic structures as well as as expression vectors in plants |
abstract | "Regulation and manipulation of sucrose content in sugar cane". The present invention relates to the regulation and manipulation of sucrose content in a sugar-storing plant, such as sugar cane, by regulating the activity of the pfp enzyme in the plant. Downregulation of the pfp enzyme has been found by decreasing the concentration of one of the subunits, that is, the ß subunit of the enzyme increases the sucrose content of the plant. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the activity of the pfp enzyme is downregulated by introducing a non-translatable or antisense form of an isolated nucleotide sequence of the invention. |
