titleOfInvention Process for the production of rubber polymers coupled to tin.
abstract "PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF RUBBER POLYMERS COUPLED TO TIN". Rubber tires that are prepared by anionic polymerization are often coupled with a suitable coupling agent, such as tin halide, to perfect the desired properties. It has unexpectedly been observed that the greatly improved properties for tire rubbers, such as low hysteresis, can be achieved by asymmetrically coupling the rubber. The present invention describes a process for preparing an asymmetric tin-coupled rubber polymer comprising: (1) continuously polymerizing at least one diene monomer in a first reactor at a conversion of at least 90 percent, using an anionic initiator to produce a polymer cement containing live polydien rubber chains; (2) to continuously feed the polymer cement produced in a first reactor to a second reactor; (3) add the tin halide to the polymer cement in a second reactor under stirring conditions to produce a polymer cement having tin halide homogeneously dispersed in it, where the residence time in the second reactor is in the range of about 15 minutes to about 4 hours; (4) continuously feeding the polymer cement having tin halide homogeneously dispersed in it in a plugged flow reactor having a residence time of about 15 minutes to about 1 hour to produce the polymer cement of a coupled rubber polymer asymmetric tin; and (5) continuously removing the polymer cement from the asymmetric tin-coupled rubber polymer from the flow reactor. The asymmetric tin-coupled rubber polymer manufactured by said process exhibits improved stability with aging.
